Setting JumpBoxes Free

Over the past couple of weeks we’ve made a number of changes to the JumpBox web site and in the process made a nice selection of JumpBoxes available as FREE downloads. Currently there are 12 JumpBoxes available on the FREE Downloads page and we’ll be adding more as time goes by. The list of free JumpBoxes currently includes: Joomla 1.5, Movable Type, Moin Moin, TikiWiki, SugarCRM 4.5 and SilverStripe along with several more. Please check out the FREE downloads page for the current list.

Online Trials for Subscriber Only JumpBoxes

Another cool thing we’ve just introduced is a new online trial mechanism that allows anyone to try out the subscriber only JumpBoxes with nothing more than a web browser. Just look for the orange “Try this JumpBox” buttons on the site and you can get a one hour, full function trial of any JumpBox without having to download a thing. We think this feature is pretty cool, but it’s still somewhat experimental so if you try it out, please let us know what you think about it.

Why subscribers love JumpBox Open

If you haven’t subscribed to JumpBox Open, here’s what you’re missing:

  • Fast, secure, agile solutions to your problems. JumpBox Open provides award winning applications that deploy in minutes. On top of that, Backup and Restore functionality keeps your data secure and gives you the flexibility to deploy to almost any environment.
  • An investment that constantly gains value. JumpBox Open subscribers received an additional 15 applications this year at no added cost. Applications for Human Resource Management, Blogging, Project Management, and more.

A new JumpBox and so much more

We’ve been quite busy over the last few weeks and today everything finally comes together so I have a bunch of things to share.

JumpBox for Openfire

First there is a new addition to JumpBox Open, the JumpBox for OpenFire. OpenFire is a real-time collaboration server (better known as instant messaging) based around the open Jabber XMPP protocol. It provides private and public instant messaging and group chat with support for any client that supports Jabber. It’s a really great system that we believe provides a nice addition to JumpBox Open. This release is available to all JumpBox Open subscribers and existing subscribers should have already received a download link and license keys. If you are a JumpBox Open subscriber and did not receive your key please contact us.

Powered by JumpBox

Next we’re very happy to be announcing a new service from JumpBox targeted at Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). This service is called “Powered by JumpBox” and allows ISVs to work with us on the creation of JumpBoxes for commercial applications. This allows us to share the expertise and quick to deploy experience we’ve developed for our Open Source based JumpBoxes with other developers and to bring greatly simplified deployment to their applications. This also brings more JumpBoxes into the world and while the applications won’t be part of JumpBox Open they will retain the common set of features that make up a JumpBox. This new service will also drive improvements to the JumpBox Platform that will find their way back into JumpBox Open.

Six Apart is the first customer for Powered by JumpBox

We’re also very excited to be announcing that Six Apart is the first customer for “Powered by JumpBox”. Over the past few months we’ve been working with them on simplifying the deployment of Movable Type and this has resulted in a number of exciting developments.

  1. A new JumpBox for the commercial version of Movable Type. This is being released today under the name “Virtual Movable Type Pro by JumpBox” and is available directly from movabletype.com.
  2. The current JumpBox for Movable Type Open Source is now available completely free through the JumpBox web site.
  3. The JumpBox for Movable Type is now an official distribution format for the Open Source version of Movable Type as well as for Movable Type Pro.

If you’re not familiar with Six Apart and Movable Type, here’s the summary.

Movable Type is Six Apart’s flagship blog software product, launched in 2001. Today, this robust social publishing platform powers the websites and blogs of many of the world’s largest media companies, Fortune 100 businesses, small and medium sized businesses, and power bloggers. Movable Type is a fully integrated, scalable, proven social publishing platform upon which to build highly interactive websites, blogs and social networks.

JumpBox participates in VMware Ready program

And one final announcement, this week we also participated with VMware in the launch of the VMware Ready verification program for virtual appliances. This is of primary benefit to customers of Powered by JumpBox, but since all JumpBoxes share a common base any improvements we release will be inherited by everything in JumpBox Open. You can find out more about VMware Ready here.

Find me at VMworld and get a JumpBox T-Shirt

OK, just one more thing, this week I’m at VMworld in Las Vegas and will be wearing the new JumpBox t-shirt around. Steven debuted it on the blog earlier this week, but I’m carrying some extras with me so if you happen to be attending VMworld and see me walking around, feel free to stop me. I’d love to talk with some JumpBox users while I’m here.

Updated JumpBoxes

Wow, that’s quite a lot of news, no wonder we’re so exhausted, but there is more. We also have a bunch of JumpBox updates to share.

  • JumpBox for Joomla 1.5.x 1.1.4 (Download)

Joomla! is arguably the world’s most popular open source content management system for public facing web sites. Joomla 1.5 is a ground-up rework of the Joomla 1.0 code base moving it to a true MVC architecture.

Movable Type is a fully integrated, scalable, proven social publishing platform upon which to build highly interactive websites, blogs and social networks.

A whole bunch of updates

Over the last couple weeks we’ve released a large number of updated JumpBoxes. There were two critical security issues detected in PHP and Python for which fixes have been incorporated into these updated releases. Updating is recommended for all users.

The following JumpBoxes have been updated: Moin Moin, OpenLDAP, Trac, Cacti, vTiger, TikiWiki, SugarCRM 4.5.x, Silverstripe, PMWiki, MySQL, Drupal 5.x, Drupal 6.x, Enterprise Wiki, Moodle, MediaWiki, Mantis, PunBB, Joomla 1.0.x, phpBB, DokuWiki, Wordpress

Note: if you’ve downloaded any of these in the past week you may already have the updated version so check the JumpBox version number.

Updated Production JumpBoxes

There are a few application updates we wanted to highlight as well. These also incorporate the latest platform fixes.

  • JumpBox for SugarCRM 5.x 1.1.3 (Download)

  • JumpBox for MoinMoin 1.1.3 (Download)

MoinMoin is an advanced, easy to use and extensible Wiki Engine with a large community of users. It’s written in Python and has a clean easy to understand user interface. Since it’s a Python program it’s not one of the most popular wikis, but that’s a shame as it has a very clean interface and is a very powerful tool for documentation projects. This makes the JumpBox for MoinMoin even more valuable, because it allows us to expose this great Wiki system to more users who we believe will find it quite valuable.

Updated to MoinMoin 1.7.1 which fixes a number of bugs. (MoinMoin release notes)

  • JumpBox for Joomla 1.5.x 1.1.2 (Download)

Trac, OTRS and 10 other JumpBoxes Updated

Hello,

In the past week we’ve released 12 updated JumpBoxes and we’re now almost complete with the transition to the new JumpBox Platform 1.1. At this point everything except the JumpBoxes for TWiki and OpenLDAP have been updated. Those two should follow later this week.

This 1.1 platform update is a very important one and is the foundation that will allow us to deliver a number of interesting capabilities in the coming months. The first new capability was introduced last week with the ability to run a select set of JumpBoxes on Amazon EC2. We’ve now published a tutorial on our blog that will walk you through the process of getting a JumpBox running on the Amazon service. We currently have JumpBoxes for MediaWiki, Wordpress, Movable Type and Bugzilla available as public AMIs for the service. AMIs for the full collection of JumpBoxes will be included in JumpBox Open Plus and Premium subscriptions shortly after we complete updating everything to the new 1.1 platform.

Of additional note: the newly updated JumpBox blog is now running on a JumpBox for Wordpress using Amazon EC2 as a hosting platform. EC2 has some limitations as a hosting service but it’s a very convenient way to get a JumpBox running on the internet and we’ve been able to take advantage of JumpBox platform features like S3 backups to work around some of the limitations of EC2. We’ll be sharing more of our experiences in this area along with additional tips on running JumpBoxes in EC2 on the new blog. Subscribing to the blog is highly recommended if you want to learn how to maximize the value of using JumpBox.

Updated Production JumpBoxes

For all of these the only change is the update to the new JumpBox Platform.

  • JumpBox for Trac 1.1.0 (Download)

Updated to the JumpBox Platform 1.1. This JumpBox still includes Trac 0.10.4. The Trac project has made 0.11.0 the new stable release and we will be issuing a new build of the JumpBox in a few weeks to support that version. If you’re interested in getting that new version it’s highly recommended that you first update to this new platform 1.1 based release.

  • JumpBox for OTRS 1.1.0 (Download)

Updated to the JumpBox Platform 1.1 and OTRS 2.2.7.

  • JumpBox for Alfresco 1.1.0 (Download)

Updated to the JumpBox Platform 1.1. We had intended to update this to Alfresco 2.9 for this release but some problems were encountered with that version and we had to stay with Alfresco 2.1. A new build of this JumpBox with Alfresco 2.9 will be coming in a few weeks.

  • JumpBox for SugarCRM 5.x 1.1.0 (Download)

    Updated to SugarCRM 5.0.0f.

  • JumpBox for Moodle 1.1.0 (Download)

Updated Beta JumpBoxes

  • JumpBox for Redmine 1.1.0 (Download)

Updated with Redmine 0.7.2. We’re still waiting for Redmine to stabilize before making this JumpBox production.

  • JumpBox for Silverstripe 1.1.0 (Download)

Updated to the 1.1 JumpBox Platform and Silverstripe 2.2.2. This release of Silverstripe is much improved over the previous releases with a more polished UI and a little more functionality out of the box. Silverstripe is intended to be used a little differently than the more popular CMS systems like Joomla and Drupal. Where those systems are intended to allow you to create the entire site online, Silverstripe is geared toward allowing non-technical users to edit the content of a site that’s been created by a separate web designer.

JumpBoxes for Cacti, MediaWiki, Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla and Bugzilla updated to JumpBox Platform 1.1

We’re happy to announce that six more JumpBoxes have been updated to the new JumpBox Platform 1.1.

Here’s a quick overview of the changes in this new platform. All updated JumpBoxes inherit these capabilities.

  2. The backup system now supports Amazon S3, JumpBox to JumpBox and direct download as backup options. The addition of Amazon S3 is particularly nice as it gives you a really easy way to setup offsite backups.

  4. A web stats package is now included by default and can be turned on with a single click.

We’ll be publishing much more information on this new platform in the coming weeks as we work on getting all the existing JumpBoxes updated.

New Releases for 5/01/08

Hello,

This is a summary of recent activity in the JumpBox Open Collection.

News

  • JumpBox updates this time around include a number of application revisions. Most of these are minor, but pretty much all of them address security issues so it’s definitely recommended that you get the latest version for any JumpBoxes you may be using.
  • We recently sent out a survey to learn more about your interest in hosting solutions for JumpBoxes. If you already filled out the survey we really appreciate it, and if not we’d still love to hear from you. One thing I’d like to clarify is that we’re looking at hosting solutions as an additional option for deploying JumpBoxes. There was some concern that the downloadable option would go away which isn’t the case. In fact, a big goal for us is to enable easy migration from a local install to a hosted install so that you can use the JumpBox to build your site locally and then easily push it onto a hosted service for public deployment.Click Here to take the survey
  • A final reminder, we have a number of new JumpBoxes undergoing beta testing in the Proving Grounds. Many of which are based on the 1.1 JumpBox platform. There will be a new 1.1 beta coming within the next week or so and we can definitely use some more feedback to help accelerate the

It’s been a busy few weeks around the JumpBox offices. With the recent launch of 6 new JumpBoxes, something that we haven’t talked much about is the issuing of a bunch of updated JumpBoxes. So here’s the list.

We also just released a greatly updated JumpBox for Redmine which contains the latest Redmine release, but is also the first public beta of the JumpBox Runtime version 1.1. This adds a number of handy new features to the JumpBox toolset. These changes will find their way into all the other JumpBoxes once we consider the 1.1 Runtime stable. Another post will coming to talk a little more about what’s new in the 1.1 Runtime.
