Announcing immediate availability of EC2 JumpBoxes in the Asia Pacific (Singapore) region

SingaporeEC2AvailabilityOur friends in Asia and the Southwest Pacific area will be happy to learn that it’s now possible to deploy EC2-based JumpBoxes closer to home. All JumpBox Pro & Business customers starting today will see the option to deploy into the recently announced AWS datacenter in Singapore.

If you’re located in this area and are already running a JumpBox in the US or Europe regions you can take advantage of our migration mechanism to move your instance to the Singapore datacenter. You’ll need to first bring up a new JumpBox on EC2 in Singapore and then follow the instructions available here on our wiki.

Running your instances closer to home should enhance usability with faster response times and more reliable network connectivity. If you’re not currently a Pro customer but would like to test the responsiveness of Singapore-based instances sign up for a free trial now.

Announcing discounts for .org’s, .gov’s and .edu’s

In an effort to make our service more accessible to those organizations who are most affected by IT budget cuts, we’re announcing the immediate availability of a discount policy on annual plans for schools, non-profits and government organizations. We know IT budgets are tight all around right now and these organizations are particularly feeling the pinch. This policy is intended to make it more affordable for these entities to gain the benefits of our service. Here’s how to take advantage of the savings:

Visit this page. If you have an email address from one of the above top-level domains you’re automatically qualified. If you have an alternative email but believe you’re eligible, simply include a note explaining the circumstances and we’ll manually approve your request.

We strive to keep our service affordable for those companies that need it most. With a yearly flat-fee access to a comprehensive library of over 55 different ready-to-run pieces of Open Source IT infrastructure, a JumpBox account is a great asset for any organization. If you’re ready to take advantage of the discount apply now. We look forward to helping you leverage the value of Open Source for your cause.

Presenting “Open Source as a service”

osaasIt’s nearly two years to the day since we debuted the JumpBox library and today we’re extremely excited to unveil “Open Source as a service.” This is a new way to think about running your Open Source server applications. It allows you to treat them collectively as a utility combining the convenience of a SaaS-based offering with the unique advantage of being able to run your infrastructure on your terms. Run your apps in any hybrid configuration of of on-premise, in the cloud or in a data center. You now have all the power and flexibility of Open Source without the headaches. This is Open Source as a service.

Amongst the changes we’ve made is the introduction of Pro accounts and a monthly billing option to make it even easier for people to get started with JumpBox. Signing up for a Pro account gives you access to over fifty-five different applications in our library all available for a flat monthly fee with no usage restrictions. With applications that span all major categories such as collaborative business apps, development environments, communications infrastructure and network monitoring tools, this is a “software swiss army knife” for anyone coping with an array of IT challenges. The month-to-month option makes it easy for individuals to get started and for businesses that prefer annual subscription terms and access to support that option exists as well.

If you’re already acquainted with JumpBox and reading this in your RSS reader, stop by our site and see what’s new. We’ve quietly been adding some great new capabilities to the service lately like streamlining the way you can launch & manage your JumpBoxes on Amazon’s EC2 cloud computing environment. We’ve also made enhancements to the way JumpBoxes run in EC2 so you can now take advantage of reserved instances (lower pricing by reserving computing time in advance) and EBS-backed instances (ability to shut down your JumpBoxes and bring them back while retaining the data).

OVF files for each JumpBox make deployment dramatically easier on platforms like VMware ESX & ESXi as well as VirtualBox. These are now available to monthly Pro subscribers.

Lastly, with the goal of making it even easier to try out the service we’ve added a two-week free trial so you can experience the benefits first-hand and risk-free. If you want a quick overview of how it all works, take a tour or start your free trial of a Pro account today.

Thanks to all our customers and users who have been providing invaluable feedback and helping sculpt the service to its current form. We have a ton of great enhancements slated for 2010 and we’re thrilled to have this opportunity to serve you and to continue to make this entire class of software more accessible and useful to a broader audience.

Withdrawing Public Launch Access to Old EC2 AMIs on 2/28/2010

When we first created EC2 AMIs we provided public launch access to the free JumpBoxes for a brief period.  Later we changed how we handled AMIs but left these old AMIs public.  At this point, we think the presence of these year+ old AMIs in the public listing is doing more harm than good.  Leaving around one year old applications can leave unsuspecting users vulnerable.  Therefor we will be removing the public launch permissions on these AMIs this coming Sunday, February 28th, 2010.

The goal of this change is not to withdraw the availability of these images from people who may be relying upon them.  The change is intended to reduce confusion and avoid putting unsuspecting users into a bad position.  On a case by case basis we will consider granting launch access to users who need them.  Please contact JumpBox Support and provide your AWS ID and the AMI ID of the AMI you need access to.  Only non-dev pay AMIs that are currently publicly available are eligible.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Happy Halloween: All Deployment JumpBoxes are now free!

iStock_000003850032XSmallWe <3 developers. And we love it when developers do creative and innovative things with JumpBoxes. To encourage more of this we've decided to make all deployment JumpBoxes completely free. This is our treat for you this Halloween.

If you’re a developer you can use these in numerous ways to speed up your development and testing processes. Here are some tricks:

  • Isolated dev environments for multiple projects Rather than running a single set of resources on your desktop that are shared amongst many different projects, you can use a JumpBox for each and have pristine project isolation. This means less entanglement and changes you make to the app server, web server or database won’t introduce issues for other apps.
  • No surprises when it comes time to deploy in production If you build your application on a JumpBox you can deploy it to production very easily using our built-in migration mechanism. Unlike moving code between a desktop dev environment to a server in your data center, there are no surprises when moving a JumpBox into production. You know it will work identically wherever it lives.
  • Rapid proofing and staging capabilities when used in conjunction with Cloud Gear How often do you have to show your boss or your client a proof of your application while it’s still in development? If you develop on a JumpBox you can make use of Cloud Gear to quickly bring up an instance of your deployment JumpBox in the cloud and demo your app publicly. Tear it down when you’re done and pay only pennies for the time you use.
  • A convenient way to distribute apps Maybe you have an app that requires a lot of custom configuration and .ini file tap-dancing to get it working? Rather than burdening the end user with a massive readme file with a bunch of ways they can mess it up, why not package your app using the JumpBox backup system and distribute this file? This is a great way to distribute a complex app. The end user simply gets the corresponding JumpBox, injects the backup and immediately has a working version of the app with all the customizations and sample data you set up.
  • Tech support implications How do you currently support users that have trouble with your application? Whether it’s via phone, email or support forums it probably consists of a series of back and forth interaction (ie. “what do you see now” – “here’s a screenshot” – “now try this and tell me what you see”…). What if instead you could have your user just send you a copy of their exact setup and you could fix it yourself and send it back? If you’re app is built on a deployment JumpBox you can do this very thing using the backup system. It creates a delta of the changes that have been made since the original so it’s a very small file but can be merged back with a blank JumpBox to re-create what the user has.
  • An easy way to test compatibility across versions of the app server Maybe you’re planning to distribute your app traditionally and have users run it natively but you need an easy way to see how it works earlier versions of the app server or the database? You can use Cloud Gear to speed up regression testing across past versions of the deployment environment by launching historical versions of the JumpBox simultaneously and deploying your app into them.

There are probably many other ways deployment JumpBoxes can be used. What other creative uses can you envision?

JumpBox for Alfresco updated to Alfresco 3.2 with WCM and Share

Alfresco is an Open Source Enterprise Content Management (ECM) system that provides features for Document Management, Collaboration, Records Management, Knowledge Management, Imaging and Web Content Management.

We’ve had a JumpBox for Alfresco in the library for some time, but Alfresco 3.2 is a significant upgrade to the previously available version. It brings the Alfresco Web Content Management (WCM) component for managing web sites, Alfresco Share for document collaboration similar to Microsoft Sharepoint and direct mounting of the Alfresco repository as an SMB file share to make it easier to add and edit documents. This new JumpBox is available here.

A few things to note about this release.

  • Alfresco is a very complicated application and takes a very long time to start. Once you go through JumpBox configuration it may take up to 10 minutes before the Alfresco application is fully running so please be patient.
  • This version of Alfresco comes with a Beta application called Alfresco Studio that does not currently function correctly. This doesn’t seem to be an issue specifically with the JumpBox but with the application in general. We’re working on a fix.
  • To get started with WCM in general please see these instructions.
  • In order to preview a WCM project in this release you need to follow these instructions first.
  • Internationalization is not fully functioning in this release. We’re working on a fix.

Please see this forums thread for additional details about this release and to ask questions if you run into any problems.

Introducing SnapLogic for Data Integration

The JumpBox Open collection continues to grow. Today we add the JumpBox for the SnapLogic Data Integration.

SnapLogic allows you to access and transform data from disparate sources and create data "pipelines" that can be chained together to perform useful tasks. Splice data from a spreadsheet on your desktop with records stored in a networked MySQL database and mash it all up with supplementary info via a public webservice on the Internet. Snaplogic is the "digital duct tape" that helps you quickly tackle integration projects.

Similar to the "Yahoo Pipes" system, SnapLogic gives you a visual environment for knitting together data feeds and manipulating data without writing code. Because pipelines are composed of modular components, new data sources can easily be "snapped in" to leverage existing logic. JumpBox for SnapLogic is a part of our JumpBox Open program and is available for download to JumpBox Open subscribers or can be trialed online using our Rapid Trial feature. To learn more about the SnapLogic software and community please visit snaplogic.com.

SnapLogic Ramp Up Video

To make it even easier to get started with SnapLogic we’ve put together a screencast tutorial that demonstrates the process of solving a data integration problem using SnapLogic. We’ll start with a fresh instance and walk through all the steps necessary to deliver a working application. In the exercise we show off some useful development techniques unique to virtualized environments and JumpBoxes and in the process create a solution to a problem that companies pay thousands of dollars per year to address. The challenge involves fighting crime and frozen bank accounts. Curious what it is? Watch the video to find out.

Introducing Unlimited Development

Last week we introduced JumpBox Open Starter, a new, lower priced tier of JumpBox Open Subscription that starts at $149 per year. This plan is geared toward the individual and as you might expect, at the equivalent of less than $13 per month, it’s been quite popular. However, as we’ve looked at initial feedback it occurred to us we could make it even better.
In fact we realized we could make all JumpBox Open plans better, so today we’re introducing unlimited development instances for all plans. Now you can deploy any number, of any combination, of any JumpBox for development and other non-production uses. This includes all current and future JumpBox releases.

Our goal is simple, expose you to the best Open Source software around in a simple, ready to deploy format that becomes a no-brainer to use for production as well. Along with the development instances, each plan also includes an allocation of instances for production deployment and our goal is that you’ll want to use more and more JumpBoxes for production deployment and as your production needs increase, you’ll upgrade your subscription to allow additional production deployments.

These new production deployment instances also introduce another much asked for capability, the ability to run more than one of the same JumpBox. So now if your plan allows five production instances you’re free to pick and choose what you want to run as those instances. Want to run 3 JumpBoxes for Wordpress, a JumpBox for MediaWiki and a JumpBox for Trac go right ahead, or maybe you just need 5 Drupal’s that’s OK too. Run five of the same, or all five different or any combination. It’s entirely up to you. Need more than five, just upgrade to the next level of subscription. Simple.

You can also switch out those production instances at any time. So if you decide you want to switch from using Drupal to using Silverstripe for your web site. No problem, you pick what you want to run and can switch at any time.

Every time you use a JumpBox you should be saving at least a couple hours of your time. Time that can be put to more productive work doing things that are hopefully more enjoyable than installing and managing Open Source software. That’s what we’re here for. If we can save you just five hours in the next year, JumpBox Open will have paid for itself.

You can learn more about the new plans here.

New Release: The JumpBox for GLPI and..(wait for it)..Updated applications!

Hello,
We’ve done it again, this time traveling across the Atlantic to the country of France to bring you this newest addition to JumpBox Open.

Introducing the JumpBox for GLPI – IT and Asset Management System

GLPI

GLPI helps you manage and track IT equipment, like computers, software, peripherals, and consumables, and their associated maintenance, documentation, and help desk requests.

GLPI stands for “Gestionnaire libre de parc informatique” (loosely translated as “Free IT Manager”) but with available support for 22 languages you don’t need to “Parlez-Vous Français” to use it. GLPI should prove useful to small and mid-sized in-house IT organizations as well as outside service providers who manage computers, etc. for others. GLPI’s additional benefits include easy management of equipment documentation, including operating procedures, FAQ’s, and lease agreements, help desk functionality that allows users to directly request help desk support, and job tracking and routing. Additionally, GLPI enables multi-user, multi-location use, and features a mail notification system which can deliver help desk requests directly to technicians.

Special Note: GLPI can be combined with another application, OCS Inventory NG,
to enable auto-discovery, inventory visualization, and application deployment to
monitored computers. Would you find that combination useful? Please let us know and we’ll do it!

Manage JumpBoxes on Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) with Amazon’s new web-based console
Amazon Web ServicesLast year we knocked the skin off the ball, crushed the bat over our knee, and trotted the bases throwing up the peace sign when we made our library of JumpBox applications available on EC2, a service which allows you to rent computing power to run your applications. Amazon has recently released a web-based point and click interface that allows you to manage those JumpBoxes on EC2 much easier.

The Amazon Web Services Management Console gives you the ability to start and stop EC2 instances (such as JumpBox AMI’s) and view and perform actions on running on those instances. Upcoming features of the console include the ability to manage Amazon’s S3 data storage service, which is supported by the JumpBox backup system. This new interface means < a href=”http://www.jumpbox.com/jumpbox-open#subscription-plans”>Premium and Plus subscribers, whose subscriptions automatically include access to all JumpBox AMI’s, as well as the general public, who can access the 12 free JumpBox AMI’s, no longer have to download any software or plugins to manage JumpBox instances. JumpBox deployments just keep getting easier.

And now ladies and gentlemen…it’s time for
